Ready Player One: 10 Tech Hacks to Lose Weight and Level Up Your Life

What does it mean? We do not care!

All I know is that I can not get rid of “Take on Me” from a-ha. He has been there ever since the trailer fell for the nerdy nostalgic bombshell that is now Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One”, a blockbuster, based on the bestseller of the same name:

As a child of the Oregon Trail generation [1] I thoroughly enjoyed all pop and nerd culture references throughout the novel and could certainly relate to the main character Wade Watts, an overweight, clumsy teenager who loves pop culture from the 80s and avoids a shitty existence by spending most of his time in virtual worlds.

This has made me think deeply about how technology insinuates itself into all aspects of our lives, both good and bad.

We can not check our e-mail every 3 seconds. We can not stop watching Netflix. We can not stop scrolling photos on Instagram. We can not attend a conversation with anyone in front of us without usually checking our phone every time it buzzes

And then we all wonder why we are too busy, distracted, unhealthy, unhappy and

Nowadays it is becoming more and more commonplace to use technology for convenience and moments of entertainment and happiness to protect us from the reality that there are parts of our lives or our health.

In Ready Player One we have a very plausible look at a dystopian future where societal trends have been maintained: technology improves and becomes more practical, and people are spending more and more

And the company has almost collapsed accordingly

Although this book is partly a warning on our direction if we do not change our behavior, it is also a lovely day Ney hero, fried in a neon-colored nostalgia, that I could not ask.

Why is the player ready?

Do not get me wrong, I love technology.

Technology has made it possible to create Nerd Fitness and to deliver this article to you. It definitely changed my life for the better and literally made everything easier.

The problem comes when the technology becomes TOO good. Video games become TOO well designed and addictive. The TV shows and delivery of these shows is so well done that you can lose an entire Saturday at 10 episodes in a row of Stranger Things before you realize it. Social media can be too ubiquitous, forcing us to forget real friendships and deep conversations by spending our time communicating virtually – and superficially – with people.

We exchange sympathies in this unwritten but very real economy.

If you’ve read one of the recent studies on this subject, you know that social media actually makes us more unhappy and more anxious [2] and yet we can not cope. stop looking for “just another shot.”

It’s getting easier to say “one more level” or “I’m just going to check instagram fast” and 10-15 minutes of your life is lost in a black hole

And that makes us leads to giving up what is really important in our lives: Eating well. Exercise regularly. Practice self-care. Sleep enough Connecting with people in real life. [3]

Which brings me back to Ready Player One .

If you have not read the book or do not plan to see the movie, how did you finish on Nerd Fitness let me quickly explain the premise:

The year is 2045, and the technology has advanced dramatically while the rest of society has devolved. Our main character Wade Watts is an obese and clumsy high school student with little money in his name.

Every day, Wade dons a virtual reality headset to connect to the OASIS, a MMOSG (massively multiplayer online simulation game). Second Life or World of Warcraft on steroids. OASIS is so successful that it’s something that everyone on the planet uses now.

In the OASIS, Wade goes to school, spends time with friends and creates this alternative life. Depending on the amount of money you own, you can visit different worlds, improve your character by completing quests and make a living for yourself.

For most people, life at the OASIS gives the coup de grace to their miserable real life, which means that they use this second life as an escape from the harsh reality. And the more they spend time in the game, the more they neglect their real health happiness, which perpetuates a negative downward spiral.

So, how can one stop letting the Matrix run and regain control?

Let’s see what Wade did.

Wade gets in shape to improve his life

Wade is in a not so good place.

He lives in isolation, is very dissatisfied with his physical appearance, struggles socially, and chooses to withdraw more and It is an anonymous character online a lot more exciting than his counterpart of the real world.

This is happening today, with people losing their jobs, relationships, families, and even their lives.

Fortunately, Wade did something as smart and intelligent as the 100% Nerd Fitness approval label.

At a turning point in history, Wade made a decision that seemed likely small at the time but that forever changed the path of his life. He activated OASIS ‘voluntary fitness lock protocol. This meant that every day, Wade forwarded his biometric data, and faked his system so that he could no longer use the OASIS before having enough physical activity every days.

What does it mean: Wade used technology to make his life significantly better instead of aggravating it. He was so addicted to using the OASIS that he needed to be there. Which meant that he wanted to play, he had only one connection path:

Doing damn exercise!

Unsurprisingly, this changed Wade’s negative spiral into a positive virtuous cycle. Getting all this exercise started to make him feel better about himself and gave him more energy. He was hooked to the way he felt after the exercise and how much he was more proud to look himself in the mirror. In other words, he had the impression of having regained control, which drove him to want to continue chasing this feeling.

Wade was smart enough to build a system that forced himself to do what suited him best. long enough until this activity because its new behavior by default.

Depending on where you are in your fitness journey, this might sound like a chimera. However, I can tell you that there is a common denominator in each of our success stories – whether single moms or computer professionals who sing opera, they all say the same Thing:

10 Ways to Make Technology for You

I do not believe that technology is intrinsically good or bad.

This is a tool that can be used to enhance or harm our lives. Often a little is good, a lot is detrimental.

Inspired by Ready Player One I wanted to go through some stages of setting up technological hurdles in my life to actually make my life less practical. I use it to prevent me from going too far into the rabbit holes of games, Netflix, and instead of doing damn things I have to do every day to improve my life.

Here are my favorite examples:

1) I WANT TO EXERCISE MORE AND SHOW LESS NETFLIX:

Although we can not do exactly what Wade did in Ready Player One, we can imitate it very closely. For example, give your spouse / friend / roommate / colleague your Netflix / Hulu login credentials. Ask them to change the password and not tell you

This is only after doing what you agreed to do that day (send them a picture of you at the gym) that they will give you the password

] 2) I CAN NOT MAKE ME TO GO TO THE GYM ENOUGH:

Do groupage of temptation. Download your favorite audio book or favorite shows on Netflix. ONLY allow yourself to watch / listen to these while you walk on a treadmill at the gym or exercise.

How to do this? Download the shows on your iPad. The next time you go to the gym, ask the general manager to set the password on your iPad so that he is the only one who can unlock it. If you want to watch the show, they will have to let you in!

3) I WANT TO SPEND LESS TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

I know that there is a big move to #DeleteFacebook now, but we use Facebook to communicate with the members of the community and our products and services. But I know whenever I go to Facebook for work reasons, I end up scrolling through my newsfeed for 10-15 min and take out VERY little.

So I use technology to my advantage. In addition to removing social media from my phone, I turned off my news feed. If you use Google Chrome, install the Newsfeed eraser. Now, my time spent on Facebook is minimal, the distraction is gone, and I can always communicate with people when it suits me. That’s what I see when I connect to Facebook:

BORING. I would also be well to go back to work!

My friend Sol gave his Facebook password to his girlfriend and assures that he is not connected to any of his computers. So he only uses it when it fits his schedule. There is no compulsive check during the day.

4) I CAN NOT MAKE ME ANY PLAY GAME VIDEO:

Be your own parent! I have installed parental controls on my Nintendo Switch and PS4. It locks the system during certain hours, or I can limit myself to playing for a certain number of hours. When you are in the right mindset, install these controls and ask someone else to set your passwords so you do not turn them off.

Stop counting on the will – these games are too good. I am currently addicted to Assassin’s Creed: Origins and the fight is real. I would imagine that if I had even taken a Fortnite shot, I would have maintained the Royal Battle until the detox next Tuesday.

5) I WANT TO AWAKEN EARLIER:

my friend Thomas Frank on this one. Schedule a really embarrassing tweet / photo to post 5 minutes after you need to wake up, and place your phone across the room. You have to wake up, cross the room and stop sending the expected tweet. WAYYYY more effective than an alarm clock that you can simply repeat!

6) I WANT TO STOP EATING FAST FOOD:

Leave your debit card at home and bring only a credit card. at work, preferably the one you share with your spouse. Ask them to receive an e-mail notification each time the card is used. And if it’s used in a fast food restaurant, it will donate $ 50 that you gave it for a cause you hate

7) I CAN NOT MAKE MY CHILD TO DO HIS CHORES: [19659006] Be like this awesome mom:

8) I WANT TO MOVE MORE AND MORE DAILY:

Get yourself a cheap fitbit (j & I have a Flex 2 and LOVED for sleep tracking purpose, but also interesting to see my number of steps). Take someone you trust and bring them to the Fitbit platform. Then, accept a number of steps you must take every day before you can watch TV, play video games, and so on. If you do not reach these stages before you relax for the day, they will post a super embarrassing photo you sent them on social media.

9) I WANT TO MAKE MEALS MORE HEALTHY:

Throw all the junk food out of your house. Instead of using Amazon Prime to deliver you unnecessary shit you do not need, have it automatically deliver you fresh groceries or meal kits regularly. Use technology and convenience to your advantage and make the most convenient option the healthiest. Once you have eliminated fast food, junk food and shit that you do not need to buy, you can increase your food budget to make up for the increase in convenience here.

You can also organize a mission with friends where you need to batch prepare your meals on Sunday (how to cook in lots here). If you do not cook your meals on Sunday, no Netflix this week (your friend would have the password), and vice versa. Diabolical. In force

10) I HAVE TOO MUCH ON MY DAMN PHONE:

Change your phone to grayscale. Suddenly, everything is less dynamic and fun and the phone begins to lose its appeal. Turn on parental control on your phone, ask someone else to set your parental lock password and delete all unnecessary applications from your phone: email, social networks, YouTube, and so on. do it, right?

Instead, have a real conversation, even with a stranger! Read a fucking book!

Use technology to change your default behavior

We are creatures of habit, and products of our environment. If we are not intentional with our time, our default behavior becomes:

When we do not take control, we subconsciously give that control to what is most practical. And technology will gladly take over this control because the price of the shares and the profit margin of each company depend on it.

These are companies with tens of thousands of employees, scientists, psychologists and billions of dollars of research at their disposal. The only goal is to get more of your attention / time / focus / money.

Of course, you may lament the fact that you do not have enough willpower or motivation to avoid all those temptations to do boring, difficult activity that will dramatically improve your life in the long run

] You can either:

  • Beat yourself for what you think you should do, but can not.
  • Accept that this is the reality, and that you have to stop counting on yourself and start relying on the systems.

I mean that in a good way, but I gave up myself a long time ago, and that was the best decision I made. Because games and social media and TV are too nice! So, I do not even give myself the opportunity to be tempted by this thing using technology to my advantage.

So have fun with that! There is no reason that you can not combine good “consequences” to help you get in the habit of becoming healthy until this virtuous cycle of “holy shit” takes place. love how it makes me feel, I’m addicted to feeling good “Be more like Wade Watts and build systems in your life and use the matrix to your advantage.
